Europe has to pay for refugees, not Turkey – Donald Trump said
US President Donald Trump made an interesting statement after meeting with his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan that the “bill” for Syrian refugees should be paid by Europe, not Turkey.
“I think that frankly Europe should be paying for this to a large extent. As of this moment Turkey’s been paying for most of it,” the US leader said.
The US president did not fail to note, strange as it may sound, that his relations with Turkey, and in particular with the Turkish president, are very good.
“We’ve been friends for a long time, almost from Day 1. We understand each others’ country. We understand where we are coming from,” were his words during the White House meeting.
Donald Trump also said it was a great honor for him to welcome Erdogan and his wife to America.
“They’re highly respected in their country and in the region, I’m hoping to salvage this relationship, but only time will tell if that is possible,” the US president added.
